Through hands-on activities, simulations, and interactive workshops, students will delve into a range of environmental topics, guided by UEA academics. This week-long activity will introduce students to the diverse disciplines that make up Environmental Sciences, including:
The week concludes with a poster presentation where students will showcase their findings and the skills they’ve developed. UEA staff will also lead sessions to help students pursue their interest in environmental sciences at school and beyond, including potential career paths.
Pre-event meetup: 01 May 2025, 3.45-5.00pm
This introductory session prepares students for the main event. Participants will receive essential info about Environmental Sciences Unlocked, meet their peers and instructors, and discuss strategies to help them make the most of their experience. The aim is to build anticipation and ensure students feel ready for the main event.
Main event: 07-11 July 2025
We’ve got a jam-packed week of activities planned for this non-residential course. Throughout the week, students will engage in practical lab-based projects, working collaboratively to solve real-world environmental challenges. They’ll also develop a broader understanding of different career pathways in environmental sciences, all while learning directly from UEA academics and environmental science professionals.
What does 'non-residential' mean?
The event takes place on campus, but instead of staying over night, students will travel to campus and back each day.
Financial support relating to transport to and from campus will be available if required – details will be shared with students who are given a place.
Teachers or students - who signs up for the activity?
Students sign up for places directly online – bookings are open from 07 January 2025.
Students should complete this signup form by 03 March 2025.
Which students are best suited to this opportunity?
If you’ve got year 10 students who have an interest in any of the following subjects, they’ll be a good match for Biology Unlocked:
We’d love to work with students who would benefit from building awareness of and confidence in science subjects – this activity will expand students’ current subject knowledge to new contexts. They’ll also need to have the ability to gain 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English, Mathematics and Science. If you think you’ve got students that are suitable, please encourage them to apply for a place.
Teachers don’t need to attend, but you’re more than welcome to visit your students if you’d like. Just let us know.
Do students need to attend all 5 days?
Yes please – students will need to be available to attend all five days of the activity and we strongly encourage attending the pre-event meet up in May.
How many students can take part?
There are 20 places available in total.
