If you’ve got students who have an interest in Engineering or related subjects like Maths, Science and Design, then they’ll be a good match for Engineering Unlocked. Engineering is the application of mathematic and scientific principles combined with creative thinking to solve problems.
We’d love to work with students who would benefit from building awareness of and confidence in science subjects – this activity will expand students’ current subject knowledge to new contexts. They’ll also need to have the ability to gain 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English, Mathematics and Science. If you think you’ve got students that are suitable, please encourage them to apply for a place.
Teachers don’t need to attend, but you’re more than welcome to visit your students if you’d like. Just let us know.
Professional engineers, academics and current university students will collaborate to inform and inspire 25 fourteen-to-fifteen-year-olds to follow an engineering career path. Your students will spend one day in our labs on campus and one day off campus visiting a local engineering firm.
Students will join us on campus at UEA in the purpose-built engineering laboratory at Productivity East. On one day they will experience university Engineering in Productivity East there, and on the other day they will meet there and then travel off campus and get the chance to see what a potential employer may look like and to see real engineering in action.
Teachers or students - who should sign up?
Students sign up for places directly online. You can sign up here.
Why should students take part?
Students will get the experience of working on real engineering problems with real engineers. They’ll be developing scientific skills and knowledge, an understanding of problem solving and gain a real-world understanding of Engineering and how the subjects that they study at school relate to Engineering. And all of that is facilitated by some of the best minds at UEA at a time when they’re making pivotal decisions about their futures, including post-16 study options.
If that wasn’t enough, students can also use their time at the event as evidence for their Youth STEMM award if they’re taking part.
Do students need to attend all 2 days?
Yes please – students will need to be available to attend both days (26 – 27 March 2024) of the activity.
How many students can take part?
There are 25 places available in total.
How can I find out more information?
Check out the summary of what the students who took part in 2022 got up to. If you’ve got specific questions please get in touch with your Outreach contact or drop our friendly team a note.
