Pre-event meet-up – Thursday 01 May 2025, 3.45-5.00pm
A chance to get the future scientists up to speed on everything they need to know about getting the most out of their week on campus.
Non-residential event – Monday 07 – Friday 11 July 2025
5 days in the lab carrying out scientific research projects across a variety of subjects. Think bioinformatics, ecology, microbiology and more…
Students will be based mainly in the purpose-built School of Biological Sciences teaching laboratories and will use equipment and perform experiments they are unlikely to have experienced before. For the first four days, students will carry out research on four very different areas of biology. On the final day, they’ll work in pairs to design posters about their research and present them to the fellow budding scientists. Finally, there will be a chance to reflect on the week and look at how they can take their biology interests further.
Over the week, students will gain…
The final programme is still being developed but the list below gives an idea of our current thoughts based on previous years’ activities.
What does 'non-residential' mean?
The event takes place on campus, but instead of staying over night, students will travel to campus and back each day.
Financial support relating to transport to and from campus will be available if required – details will be shared with students who are given a place.
Teachers or students - who signs up for the activity?
Students sign up for places directly online – bookings are open from 07 January 2025.
Students should complete this signup form by 03 March 2025.
Which students are best suited to this opportunity?
If you’ve got year 10 students who have an interest in Biology or a related subject then they’ll be a good match for Biology Unlocked.
We’d love to work with students who would benefit from building awareness of and confidence in science subjects – this activity will expand students’ current subject knowledge to new contexts. They’ll also need to have the ability to gain 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English, Mathematics and Science. If you think you’ve got students that are suitable, please encourage them to apply for a place.
Teachers don’t need to attend, but you’re more than welcome to visit your students if you’d like. Just let us know.
Do students need to attend all 5 days?
Yes please – students will need to be available to attend all five days of the activity and we strongly encourage attending the pre-event meet up in April.
How many students can take part?
There are 30 places available in total.
